An African Volk: The Apartheid Regime and Its Search for Survival


It was not until my second stint in the South African archives, almost
midway through this project, that I began to really see the story that is
told here. Behind closed doors, the leaders of the apartheid regime,
some of the most widely reviled figures in postwar history, were
engaging in vibrant reassessments of apartheid’s compatibility with the
postcolonial world. Moreover, their divergent conceptualizations of
race, nation, and state—as well as the interrelationships between these
—led them to disagree vehemently over both the diagnosis of the
regime’s legitimacy problem and the suitable remedy
