Claiming the City: Protest, Crime, and Scandals in Colonial Calcutta, c. 1860-1920
As the administrative and commercial capital of British India and the
earliest experiment in modern urbanization in the sub-continent,
Calcutta posed an enormous challenge to both its residents and its
architects. This book is structured around a set of key questions
concerning space, popular culture, and everyday practices in colonial
Calcutta in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. It investigates
the role of the city in fundamentally reconfiguring the social, cultural,
and moral landscapes of its diverse inhabitants, while itself being
constituted of their complex practices, negotiations, and imaginations.
